Cheap Camcorder Showdown: Creative Vado Vs. Flip Ultra (Vado Looks Superior, Flip Shoots Better) [Camcorders]

On paper, Creative’s Vado might outclass and out-spec the wildly successful Flip Ultra camcorder it very liberally (like crazy, PETA liberal) takes its cues from, but what about in the real world? Laptop Mag tosses ‘em together and finds that while the Vado outpaces the older Flip most respects—it’s cheaper, slimmer, more attractive and has a superior layout and larger LCD—the Flip wins where it counts: video quality.

The Flip Ultra’s clips were “clearer and more detailed across the board,” while the Vado tended to overexpose and had problems capturing details. Overall winner: Flip, despite costing about $30 more. If the size issue is still pushing you toward the Vado, wait a couple weeks, since it looks like the Flip smaller and tartier pretty soon. [Laptop Mag]

George Bush has announced that US citizens will now be able to send cellphones to friends and relatives in Cuba, an extension of the current rules which allow other gifts to be sent. We’ve covered Raul Castro’s opening up of the technology markets in Cuba before (links below), and Bush sees this as an extension of that, although he’s not sure Castro will play ball:

If Raul is serious about his so-called reforms, he will allow these phones to reach the Cuban people.

Cuba uses a GSM network, so most phones will work there, even though with contracts running at around US$120 just to sign up, cheap handsets might be more of a political dig from Bush than a real help to the Cuban people. Bush again:

Through these measures the United Says is reaching out to the Cuban people, yet we know that life won’t fundamentally change for Cubans until their form of government changes.

The embargo is a joke, although not a very funny one. US citizens just pretend to be Canadian and take vacations, and Havana cigars are freely available (we’re guessing the Bill Clinton wasn’t smoking anything but the best). For the Cuban people, though, it means they can’t join the modern world. And that’s a subject close to our hearts here at G Lab. The upshot of Bush’s whole scheme here is most apt to be the boosting of a black market in cellphones for Cuba’s rich. Unlocked Cuban iPhone, here we come.

So does Jason Kottke, and so does The Cory. We like to look of it, and the low-fi hackery involved, but in the end we side with the guys from MTAA, who point out the dust problems and the chalky sleeves that the BlackBook Pro entails.

It’s only a good idea if you never, ever remove the laptop from your desk and never open it. Sometimes the techno-nerds really lose all perspective.

And before you start posting comments on how dumb this is, be sure maximize your angry, bile-fueled reply by taking a second look at the picture. Notice the Moleskine in the corner? Go.
