For those of you who are here just for the gadgets, don’t forget about the myriad wonders to be found elsewhere at Wired.com. This day there’s a knockout story from editor Leander Kahney, How Apple Got Everything Right By Doing Everything Wrong, that takes us from Taylorism to the tyranny of camelcase product names — and explains the consequences of tech moving from being driven by the needs of business customers to the needs of consumers.

DSLR Sizemodo: Nikon D40x vs “World’s Smallest” Olympus E-420 [Digital Cameras]

We just got the Olympus E-420, and before we shoot a million test shots (rough approximation), we thought we’d take a look at it’s biggest claim to fame: it’s the smallest and lightest DSLR around. Here you see it with the relatively handy and lightweight Nikon D40x, which in body is almost absolutely identical to its update, the D60. Below you can see the two from all the necessary angles, with starter lenses and even on my kitchen scale—both weighed with batteries, as they should be. OK, Olympus, we get it! They’re using Openwave’s OpenWeb, which supposedly will make for a more desktop-like and less crap-like world wide web experience, even on sites not optimized for mobile devices. It’ll hit handsets in a couple weeks. [Treo Central]

Timeit1 It’s colorful, coils automatically around your wrist, and looks vaguely edible, as if made out of hardened cake topping. It is, in fact, one of those inscrutable LED watches, and so marks the wedding of two distinct and uniquely pointless gimmicks.

Named “Time-It,” this modern take on the slap bracelet won’t be found in cereal boxes — it’s a startling $190 — but is waterproof, rechargeable, and available in four shades.
