The £99 Elonex One Laptop: Basically British OLPC Without the Innovation [PCs]
Brit PC maker Elonex is developing the Elonex, a Personal computer meant to run in the same range as the OLPC. It’ll have Wi-Fi, a flash HDD, a Linux OS, a rugged case, wireless music server and weigh less than 2.2 pounds. The price? About £99. Of course, they’re doing it for the children and not the PR. Elonex?
Unlike the OLPC, which for $400 buys one for yourself and one for some kid in an underdeveloped country, for each 100 Elonex cheapies sold, the company will donate one.
This space is getting crowded. Looking at the Elonex website and noticing a lack of strong products, I’m curious if they’re even developing this machine themselves. Asus made the EEE, OLPC has tons of innovation, and no doubt Intel put a bit of engineering muscle behind Classroom. I believe the intentions are well put here, but you can’t help but notice the PR lift a move like this brings. [Elonex via ZDUK]

Stuffed animals are creepy enough as is — there are few superior ways to make people uncomfortable in your home than having a dead animal propped up next to the sofa — but this just takes it to the next level. The “Fixed - Fawn” by New Zealand artist Lisa Black crams gears and mechanics into the cadaver of a dead baby deer, making it look enjoy it had surgery performed on it by a mad scientist. And if you think that’s unsettling, you should check out the ferret on her website. You’ll thank me for sparing you it this early in the morning.

The Continental is a set of travel cables for Mac users. Consisting four AC plugs with 12″ cords, it will let you adapt a Magsafe power brick to just about any power outlet around the world by plugging neatly into the brick itself.
It’s a nice solution, but the Mac bricks have a standard small kettle-lead socket, so any cheapo cable should work, or you could just keep the Apple supplied cable and pick up a small travel adapter. If you simply must have matching gear, though, this set will cost you $40.

Quaker Oats Working on an Oatmeal-Making Alarm Clock [Breakfast]
The brilliant minds at Quaker Oats are currently hard at work on an alarm clock that’ll prepare a steaming bowl of oatmeal for you just as it wakes you up. Containing an insulated milk container, a clock and a heater, it’s got all the necessary equipment to make sure you stave off hunger with some hearty oats before work. Also, uh, diabeetus. That’s all I’ve got; it’s Friday afternoon, people, and I spent too much time on the retarded image you see to the left. Take what you can get. [Daily Record via Gadget Lab]
