ijailbreak.pngCall it what you will – Jailbroked, Jailbreakened, Jailbricked – it’s been done to the latest revisions of both iPhone and iPod Touch. There are a few ways to do it, all of which seems to use a similar method and/or the same set of code. One is from developer Nate True, one from the iPhone Dev team, and one from Ben, co-13-year-old developer. There are methods to jailbreak the firmware on both OS X and Windows.

Over the weekend, I tried out the iPod touch hack from Ben, called iJailBreak. It got scary at times, but in the end it worked fine. I even have the $20 application bundle on there, including the new jiggly icons and the WiFi psuedo-GPS thingy for Google Maps (note: it works great, but you’ll need to actually be connected to a WiFi network for the maps to actually load).

IJailBreak is an application. Fire it up and plug in the iPod Touch, then follow the instructions. Mostly you’ll be clicking a few buttons in dialog boxes and waiting (the application downloads the 1.1.3 firmware from Apple’s servers, which can take a while).

The install hung for me, but following the instructions, I left it alone for 15 minutes and then forced a reboot. Everything works fine, even though you’ll need to reinstall any third party applications you had before. Good luck!

It seems the first iPhone 1.1.3 jailbreak by Nate True we all rushed to install is throwing a handful of problems, some of which are fixable and some of which leave us wishing we had waited a little bit. Here’s what we know so far from personal experience and what we’ve read on the web.

Google Maps Faux GPS has problems working unless you install Navizon.

• Can’t change EDGE Settings. Jesus’s EDGE is now nonfunctional because he can’t enter in the custom settings for his provider. This is not a huge deal for people actually on AT&T or one of the three official providers in Europe, but for people who’ve SIM unlocked and are wandering about on other networks, it’s a massive deal.

• The jailbreak may break official third party apps from the SDK? We don’t know if this will be the case, but iPhone Atlas claims that the method Nate used to jailbreak disables “Nikita,” which is a component in the iPhone that installs signed software. Signed software, in the iPhone’s case, would be official third party apps that are signed by Apple to make sure they don’t corrupt or kill your device. If this is broken and unfixable, then jailbreakers may be unable to get in on the SDK action in February.

The official iPhone Dev Team jailbreak was released yesterday, but we haven’t had any experience with this yet.

What have you heard? Drop a note in the comments detailing the problems you’ve had with the jailbreak or just 1.1.3 in general.

Sony Reader Goes Total Stereotype for Valentine’s Day [Love]

image2-1.jpgIf you’re looking for that extra special gift for a woman in your life this Valentine’s Day (and the lingerie store has burned to the ground, emitting whatever toxins pleather releases into the air when melted), remember that old fallbacks (which the unenlightened might call stereotypes) are key: pink and Harlequin Romance novels. Luckily, Sony is offering both in a special $299 V-Day Sony Reader Bundle. Coming with a pink “Cross Your Heart” Reader skin and a coupon for 14 Harlequin Special Releases…let’s just say that we’d never date anyone who accepted this gift in earnest.

For those interested in what a real lady (my wife) considers the Sony Reader, hit up her impressions here. For the record, she’s still reading with it nonstop.

Ipodbattery Does ipodjuice comprehend its customers or what? The company, which specializes in do-it-yourself and mail-order replacement of dead iPod batteries, is now offering customers the option to watch live video their precious gizmo being operated on. For some, this will seem like the epitome of “Needs to get out more,” but real gadget weenies will no doubt take advantage of the opportunity in droves.

Seems like good promotion, too, as they probably wouldn’t be publicizing the proceedings if they were working with chainsaw and duct tape.

Spy_Satellite_Maserati.jpgA anonymous government official warned that a US intelligence satellite has lost power and could crash to earth sometime in February or March. When pushed on the matter, a National Security Council spokesman stated this:

“Appropriate government agencies are monitoring the situation. Numerous satellites over the years have come out of orbit and fallen harmlessly. We’re looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite might cause.”

While this is all true and should feel like a relief, I just get a chill through my spine when I hear that the government is looking at “potential options.” [Reuters]

The guys at Gizmodo took their Apple-loaned MacBook Air and stripped it down, just to see how easy it would be. Result? Very. Ten screws secure the bottom cover, and after removal, the cover lifts off to reveal an equally simple to remove battery.

Apparently, Apple wasn’t very pleased at having the review machine opened up, so Giz took down the video and pictures. The web being the internet, though, means that the video had already made it to YouTube, and the pics to Apple Insider.

Apple Patents Show Shuffle-Esque Remote Control, Other Goodies [Apple]

Apple%20Patent%20GI.jpgApple has just walked home with six new patents, one of which details an iPod shuffle-like remote control. The image might not tell us much, but a reverse side clip is clearly visible, as is some form of circular control, which could be a scroll wheel or four way control pad. The iPhone comes with a basic in-line remote; could this be a more sophisticated offering? The other four patents described the following. Update: These products don’t seem to be bringing anything new. The lanyard looks to be an iPod nano peripheral; both iPod shuffle iterations indicate the current model, and the remote has a striking similarity to the current iPod remote control, with integrated FM radio. The image technology might still be a note worthy patent acquisition.

A lanyard design, two iPod shuffle variations and a technology that allows production of smooth motion compensated frames by combining multiple interpolation results. Information is scant beyond that, but we do know the remote control patent was filed back in March 2007, and has just now been cleared. Bearing that in mind, the idea may have made it to the scrap heap, but we shall watch this space nonetheless. [ipodnn via Mactropolis]
